OK, so I'm not good at the sequencing. My first entry, now the oldest, said welcome and here we go let's get started, and it is now the last entry. Owell. That one started with paintings done since our sabbatical in Valencia, Spain. This set is all the work done in that six month span in 2005. I may then do one with non painting work like sculpture and mosaic, then hopefully real soon I will start posting new work, from our current big new life and art phase, Paonia, CO. Stay tuned. The below set are all gouache on paper except where noted. To see a larger view, just click the image.
"Peniscola 1" 13"x10"
"Peniscola 2" 13"x10"
These were the first two of the trip. They were done in the first two weeks while we lived in the freezing cold apartment on the beach in the summer resort town of Peniscola.
"Sombras" 53"x25" Gouache on wood nfs
The first piece done in the new apartment in Valencia. Painted on panel mounted in an old table frame found in a dumpster on the street.
"Clark and Kalel" 20"x30"
watercolor on paper
"Clark and Kalel" detail watercolor on paper
"Clark and Kalel" detail watercolor on paper
This consumed me for the first month in Valencia. It was an idea and an avenue of exploration I'd been working on for years and it was part of a series. I loved the process and some of the earlier stages of the piece, but the final result all complete did not live up to my hopes, and it was so time consuming that I switched gears and went back to landscape.
"Castillo Papa Luna" 30"x22" sold
"Sagunto" 30"x22" sold
"Sagunto 2" 30"x22"
"Oz" 21"x14"
"Xativa" 16"x12" sold
Soon after arrival, I joined "La Cercle de Bellas Artes de Valencia" an art group, or club really, where I could go do figure drawing every day. Soon the figures began ending up in the landscapes.
"Paisaje" 30"x22"
"Don Quixote" 30"x22"
"Paisaje" 12"x11" Goauche wash off sold
"Las Palmas" 30"x22" sold
"Camouflage" 30"x22" sold
"Carvello" 16"x12" sold
Then came a trip to Italy and some resulting pieces, both straight landscapes and some with the figure in them.
"From Vernazza" 28"x16" sold
"Sienna" 30"x22" sold
"Il Duomo" 7"x5" watercolor on paper sold
"Vernazza" 30"x22" sold
"Riomaggiore" 22"x30"
"Rigamarole" 14"x11"
A trip to southern Spain for a show of some of the above work, along with a trip to Portugal, yielded this one lone piece, as we soon had to pack up and get back home to Seattle once we got back to Valencia.
"Salema" 20"x13" sold
These next three are not from Valencia, but from a series and a show I did right before we left. It was a strong body of work and the show sold out, which was a good confidence builder for the upcoming trip. I decided to stick them on the end here rather than make a new post.
"Weed" 30"x22" sold
"San Juan" 30"x22" sold
St. Mary's 30"x22" sold
